Answers to common questions about Persona. Something else, a bug or an idea? Email manhpv151090@gmail.com and I usually reply within a few days. When writing about a bug, please include your browser and its version, the Persona version (shown on chrome://extensions), the site and the device you picked.
How do I switch device?
Click the Persona icon in the toolbar and pick a device. Choose where it applies: this tab only, this site (every tab on that domain), or everywhere as your default. Pick Real identity to stop spoofing in the current tab. By default the tab reloads so the page sees the new device from the first request; you can turn that off in Settings.
Which choice wins when several apply?
The most specific one: a choice for this tab, then the rule for this site, then your default. In the popup, the button that removes the tab's own choice makes the tab follow the site rule or default again. Site rules are listed, and can be deleted, in the dashboard under Site rules.
How do I open the dashboard and the scorecard?
Press Alt+Shift+U, or click Check leaks in the popup. You can change the shortcut on chrome://extensions/shortcuts.
What does the scorecard check?
It compares what the tab reports on every layer: request headers, Client Hints, JavaScript (navigator, userAgentData, screen, pointer media queries) and Web Workers. Anything that still shows your real device is highlighted. Run check makes one request to a header-echo service (https://httpbin.org/headers by default, changeable in Settings) so you can see the headers a server receives.
How do I add my own device?
In the dashboard, open Personas and paste a User-Agent string: Persona fills in the matching platform, Client Hints, touch and screen values, all editable. You can also Duplicate a preset to start from something close, or Import JSON to add a device copied with Copy JSON in another browser.
A site still detects my real device
Some signals cannot be changed by an extension:
- Web Workers and Service Workers keep the real
navigator.userAgent. - Pages Chrome protects (
chrome://pages, the Chrome Web Store) only receive the header changes. - High-entropy Client Hints are always sent for Chromium devices, even when the site did not ask for them.
Sites can also look at things Persona does not change, such as your IP address, fonts or GPU. Run the scorecard on the tab to see which layer leaks.
A site broke after I switched device
Sites sometimes serve a different page to phones, crawlers or other browsers. Pick Real identity for that tab, or delete the site rule under Site rules, and reload. Turning the extension off with the switch in the popup stops all spoofing at once.
Does Persona collect any data?
No. It has no server, no analytics and no accounts, and your settings stay in your browser. Details are in the privacy policy.
Which browsers are supported?
Chrome 116 or later and other Chromium browsers that install extensions from the Chrome Web Store, such as Edge, Brave and Opera. Firefox and Safari are not supported.
How do I uninstall it?
Right-click the Persona icon and choose Remove from Chrome, or remove it on chrome://extensions. Every header rule and setting is deleted with it, and sites see your real device again.
